Council tax for homes in Bexleyheath, Barnehurst, Bexley village and Upton is billed and collected by the London Borough of Bexley. Figures below are the council's published 2026/27 annual charges, and the rules are from its own council tax pages, so check the council tax hub before you act.

What are the council tax bands in Bexley?

Every home is placed in one of eight bands by the Valuation Office Agency, based on its value, and the council's page lists the valuation ranges as Band A up to £40,000, B £40,001 to £52,000, C £52,001 to £68,000, D £68,001 to £88,000, E £88,001 to £120,000, F £120,001 to £160,000, G £160,001 to £320,000 and H over £320,000. You can check your band using the search tool linked from the council's band page.

How much is council tax in Bexley for 2026/27?

The council publishes these annual charges:

| Band | Annual charge |
|------|---------------|
| A | £1,577.57 |
| B | £1,840.50 |
| C | £2,103.43 |
| D | £2,366.36 |
| E | £2,892.22 |
| F | £3,418.07 |
| G | £3,943.93 |
| H | £4,732.72 |

The council's page does not break these down into the shares that go to the Greater London Authority and the borough, so we do not either.

What if I think my band is wrong?

The valuation is set by HMRC's Valuation Office, not the council. If you think your band is wrong, the council says you must keep paying at your current band while a challenge is considered. You can contact the Valuation Office through GOV.UK or on 03000 501 501.

How can I pay?

The council says the easiest way is to register for an online council tax account and pay by Direct Debit. You can choose the 1st, 15th or 25th of the month, and pay either as one lump sum or in 10 monthly instalments. Other options on the council's ways to pay page are:

- online banking transfer, using the bank details on that page
- the 24-hour automated telephone line on 020 3045 5200, with your account number and debit card ready
- in person with a debit card at Central Library, Crayford, Erith, Sidcup, Thamesmead or Welling libraries

The council currently reports technical issues with online card payments, so use another method if card payment is unavailable when you try.

What discounts can I claim?

All discounts are applied for using one online form, linked from the discounts page. The council lists:

- Single person discount: 25 percent off if you live alone, or live with someone who is disregarded for council tax purposes.
- Student exemption: households where everyone is a full-time student pay no council tax.
- Annexe discount: 50 percent off the annexe bill if it is used as part of your main home.
- Disability reduction: the bill drops to the next lower band if your home has been made larger or adapted because of disability. In Band A the reduction is one-sixth.
- Care home exemption: an unoccupied home is usually exempt when the occupier has moved permanently into care or hospital.
- Carer discount: for people who provide 35 or more hours of care a week to someone on specified disability benefits, and who are not their spouse, partner or the parent of a child under 18.
- other discounts for apprentices, youth training, certain child benefit cases, religious communities and some job-related second homes.

If you are on a low income, ask about the Council Tax Reduction Scheme, which is a separate scheme described on the council's reduction page.

What do I do when I move?

- Moving into Bexley: tell the council as soon as possible so an opening bill can be sent. Tell your previous council that you have left.
- Moving within Bexley: the council says it normally moves your details, including Direct Debit and any credit, to the new address, but you should report the change promptly.
- Moving out of Bexley: give the council your forwarding address so a closing bill can be sent, and tell your new council. Cancel paid subscriptions separately, such as garden waste.

Overpayments on Direct Debit are refunded automatically. Other refunds need a separate request, and the council says refunds are processed twice weekly and take three working days. Details are on the change of address page.
